Watch the preparations of Pakistani Muslims to welcome the month of Ramadan

00:01:21

Video prices: IQD 240/day

Muslims in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi spread out in markets and stores, in order to stock up on food as part of their preparations for the start of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. The prices of goods usually rise during the month of Ramadan, especially the prices of dates, one of the most important items for Muslims in Ramadan, which prompted people to notify the government early. Shakeel Abbasi from Abbottabad said: “People (poor people) cannot afford the high price of dates. We appeal to the government to reduce the prices.” Local authorities usually announce a so-called “Ramadan package” to help mitigate some of the increases in the prices of basic commodities, such as flour, sugar, dates, milk, fruits and vegetables. The first day of Ramadan begins the day after the sighting of the crescent moon, which marks the beginning of a new lunar month. This year it is expected to start from May 6 to 7 in Pakistan.
