On the eve of the holy month of Ramadan, we walked around the Molenbeek neighborhood in the Belgian capital, Brussels, and met members of the Muslim community residing in Belgium. The focus of our questions was to find out what the Arab and Muslim community feels about the holy month. It is worth noting that photographing and talking with the residents of the Molenbeek neighborhood is not an easy matter, as many of the residents do not want to talk to the media. They accuse it of being biased against them and consider that it has contributed to distorting the image of the Belgian neighborhood, because according to those we met, it was creative in talking about the negative aspects and portraying the residents as monsters and disdaining their Islamic religion. In their view, it was not objective because it neglected to talk about the bright features of the neighborhood, which is inhabited by a Muslim majority. Maimouni Abdel-Ilah, a Moroccan from the Moroccan countryside who lives in Molenbeek, says that for Abdel-Ilah, spending the month of Ramadan in Morocco is the most beautiful thing in existence. And nothing can ever compare to it. Since everyone fasts in Morocco, while here in Belgium we see many who do not fast like us.. I also long for Tarawih prayers in Morocco.. and living here in Belgium is somewhat expensive compared to Morocco. As for those who work, their living conditions are okay, and those who suffer during the month of Ramadan are the non-working class. Abdul Rahim adds that during the month of Ramadan, the demand for shopping by the Muslim community increases, and this prompts merchants to raise prices for some products and goods. As for Mr. Trisha Mohammed, who is of Moroccan origin and resides in Montalbec, he told us that spending Ramadan in Morocco is unparalleled and has a special taste. It is true that there is a longing to hear the call to prayer at sunset, calling for the start of Iftar, and we have a great longing to meet loved ones and friends. Zeruel Al-Hassan, a young Moroccan who also lives in Molenbeek, says: Brussels has very good people and Ramadan here has a special flavour. Our country, Morocco, is wonderful. Watch also Molenbeek...the neighborhood that started to revolt against its bad reputation...how so?
